Alternative Food Storage (Overview)

Being a household of just two (plus dog), we usually have lots of leftovers. Not just of cooked food, but mostly parts of fresh/raw ingredients. For example, only half of a tomato, a block of cheese, half of the ground beef, etc. We were using zip-lock bags LIKE CRAZY! And not reusing them. Once that tomato was used it, out went the bag, then the next tomato we cut into got a new bag!

If you are just using zip-lock bags, you can:
A. reuse them as much as possible
B. clean them out and recycle them to a proper drop-off location (as mentioned in a previous post).

If I'm going to be reusing something though, I wanted something a little more sturdy than zip-lock bags. I also wanted to make one time purchases instead of buying zip-lock bags all the time (even if you do reuse them, they are going to wear out and you'll need new ones). I'm going to list all of the items that I use, but I will go into each of them separately on their own posts, so it wont get too cluttered. Future posts will have my reviews of them and photos. I am listing the specific brands that I have experience with, but of course there are many similar things out there created by different companies that you could look into.
  1. Hutzler Food Savers
  2. Food Huggers
  3. Blue Avocado reusable zip-lock bags
  4. Wrap N Mat (haven't actually used this, but it was recommended by my aunt)
  5. BahrEco mesh produce bags
  6. Your typical glass and Tupperware containers
I wont write a separate post on that last one, it's pretty self explanatory. Many of these items I bought at Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, or Giant, but most of the links are directly to the company website so you can read about them on your own if you would like.
